About Us

A love of fine woodwork

If you would like to learn how to produce professional or fine woodworking projects in a fun, safe and easygoing environment with an experienced instructor, The Dovetail Joint is for you!

The Dovetail Joint’s aim is to provide an relaxed educational experience for both male and female adults, interested in working with wood. Beginners and experienced woodworkers are welcome.

The Workshop

The workspace is located in Clifton Grove, near Orange, NSW. The original workshop was extended in 2017 so now a much more spacious area with views over the beautiful Clifton Grove valley is offered.

The equipment ranges between traditional hand tools and latest power machines, similar to those used by artisans for bespoke furniture making. View equipment list

Safety is paramount in my workshop and I have completed courses in WH&S.

Your instructor

Malcolm K. Haling
(Instructor and Proprietor)

Trained in Newcastle as an Industrial Arts teacher with NSW Dept. of Education, I started teaching in 1971. During this time as both Teacher and Head Teacher in schools across NSW, (1980 to 2014, James Sheahan Catholic High, Orange) most of my working life has involved imparting skills to help high school students gain practical knowledge of basics and more advanced construction techniques.

Helping to design and organize efficient workshops and a gradual pleasure in working with wood during these years has been the impetus behind my new venture The Dovetail Joint.
